Article: LHS Music Stars at State
Paul Redding

On May 4th, several students from LHS competed in this year's state music festival in Minot, ND.  At the festival, musicians performed their solos or small ensemble pieces for a judge, and received critique and evaluation from them.  Of the nine events entered from Larimore, eight of them received a star rating, the highest mark in the rating system.  They are listed below:

Caleb Behm, vocal solo- the Erl King
Christian Feldmann, vocal solo- Pupile Nere
Ryan Iverson, trumpet solo- English Suite
Alex Mutch, Adam Bill, Ryan Iverson; trumpet trio- Trumpet Voluntary
Walter Lawson, tuba solo- A Touch of Tuba
Meredith Mutch, flute solo- Villanella
Danica McDonald, vocal solo- Qual Farfalletta Mante
Hannah Holter, Christian Feldmann, vocal duet- All Through the Night

A special recognition was given to Danica McDonald for receiving the Outstanding Performance award for her vocal solo.  The "OP" is a special award that each judge is able to award at the end of the day.  It marks a particular performance as the judge's favorite for the entire festival.  The OP is an honorable distinction to receive.

Congratulations to this year's state qualifying musicians from LHS!

LHS Students Attend UND Festival

Several students from Larimore high school recently attended the 2013 UND Honor Band and Choir Festival.  Danica McDonald, Meredith Mutch, Hannah Holter, Caleb Behm, Christian Feldmann, and homeschool student Emma Redding were selected by live audition to participate.

Auditions are conducted in late October, and extend throughout the entire state of ND.  Those selected gather for two days of intensive rehearsals.  Approximately 12 hours of rehearsal time is spent to prepare a full concert for each of the three groups.  For many, the concert repertoire is among the most difficult they will ever encounter in their high school career.

The final concert was performed on the stage of the Chester Fritz auditorium, on the campus of UND.  Students performed to an audience of around 1,800 people. Congratulations to all of our students who participated in this year's festival.

May Events

This month, there are a couple of important dates for the music department at LHS.  First of all, the spring music awards banquet is scheduled for Monday, May 7 at 7pm.  Our Spring Concert is slated for Thursday, May 17 at 7:30pm.  In addition to our normal warm up and tune up time, we will be taking photos for the school yearbook at 7:00pm.  All music students are to report to the music room at 6:45pm to set up instruments and get lined up for pictures.  Our concert will feature the junior high bands and choirs, as well as performances from this year’s state music qualifiers.

Baccalaureate services will be held Sunday, May 20 at 8:00pm.  LHS choir members are asked to report at 7:30 to get robes, warm up and be seated.

Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, May 27.  This year we will have a number of seniors graduating as well as some of our junior class members serving as honor ushers during the ceremony.  As such, we will need the members of the junior high band to plan on performing with the band in the graduation ceremony.  All junior high band members are asked to be present.  Students with older siblings/family members who are graduating will be able to sit with family during the ceremony.  They are only needed for the processional and recessional at the beginning and end of the proceedings.

Thank you for your help in achieving a successful end of the year!
